Comptroller to Highlight Ellicott City Retail Comeback Stories on Monday

Destroyed by separate floods, Sweet Elizabeth Jane, E.C. Pops have rebuilt; Manor Hill Tavern to be recognized for "Bird's the Word"

WHO:

Comptroller Peter Franchot

WHAT:

The Comptroller will spend Cyber Monday promoting brick-and-mortar businesses in Ellicott City as part of his Shop Maryland for the Holidays campaign.

He'll start at Sweet Elizabeth Jane, a vintage-inspired lifestyle store that sells clothing, home decor and gifts. Originally located in the old Caplan's Department Store on lower Main Street, the building was destroyed in the July 2016 flood and relocated further up the hill in less than five months. Mr. Franchot will present a proclamation to owner Tammy Beideman in recognition of her commitment to rebuilding and for being named the 2018 Maryland Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Next, the Comptroller will visit E.C. Pops, a gourmet popcorn and candy store that reopened in October after its original location was severely damaged in the May 2018 flood. Offering sweet and savory popcorn flavors, as well as fudge, hard-to-find candy and vintage sodas, E.C. Pops is a thrill for young and old. The Comptroller will present a proclamation to owners Douglas Yeakey and Lance Sovine for their popularity and persistence to reopen in Ellicott City.

Afterwards, Mr. Franchot will head to Manor Hill Tavern to present a proclamation to owner Randy Marriner in recognition of the restaurant's "Bird's the Word" chicken sandwich, which was a top-five vote-getter in the Comptroller's recent "Maryland's Best Chicken Sandwich" survey. The sandwich consists of bread & butter pickle-brined fried chicken, chipotle slaw, house pimento cheese, pickles and spicy honey drizzle, served on spent grain brioche.
