Comptroller Franchot to Present St. Mary's Schaefer Award Tuesday

WARM partners with faith community, government agencies to provide food, shelter and fellowship to area homeless during cold winter months

Comptroller Peter Franchot

Comptroller Franchot will spend Tuesday in St. Mary's County, beginning with a visit to Chaptico Market & Deli where he will present a proclamation to new owners Lucas & Jody Black. The family-owned and operated store has been part of the rural community for more than 50 years and is widely known for delicious fried chicken and its Southern Maryland stuffed ham.

Next, Mr. Franchot will head to Lexington Park where he will present the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for St. Mary's County to Wrapping Arms 'Round Many (WARM), a volunteer-driven winter emergency sheltering program for the homeless community that is supported by more than 50 area churches. Started in 2009, WARM provides up to 25 homeless individuals each week during the cold winter with a warm, safe place to sleep and two hot meals. Executive board members Marcie Blevins, Steve Tuttle, Dolly Griffin and Brent Schmitt will accept the Schaefer Award on behalf of the organization.
