Franchot to Announce New Award in Memory of Late Speaker Mitchell

Stops on Friday also include Queen Anne's County Cornerstone Award at Fisherman's Inn, plaque presentation at Jimmie Foxx statue and dedication of Washington College academic hall

Comptroller Peter Franchot

Comptroller Franchot will spend Friday afternoon on the Eastern Shore, beginning with the presentation of the Queen Anne's County Cornerstone Award to Fisherman's Inn. A Kent Narrows landmark since 1930, the family-owned establishment known for its panoramic water views and fresh seafood dishes was completely destroyed in a pre-Christmas fire in 1980. The Schulz family rebuilt and reopened within seven months, and has continued to expand and adapt to changing customer demands, making it a favorite among both locals and tourists.

Next, Mr. Franchot heads to Sudlersville where he will visit the Jimmie Foxx statue and tour the Train Station Museum. He will present a plaque commemorating the 90th anniversary of the 1929 World Series champion Philadelphia Athletics, on which Foxx played. The Sudlersville native was one of baseball's most powerful hitters, slugging 534 home runs in a 20-year career primarily with the A's and Boston Red Sox.

The Comptroller then travels to Twinny's Place in Galena where he will announce the creation of the R. Clayton Mitchell Jr. Award for Distinguished Public Service. Named after the two-term Maryland Speaker of the House who passed away in June, this new award recognizes past or present elected officials at all levels of government who exemplify the true spirit of public service, demonstrating strong leadership, humility and compassion for the communities they serve.

The Comptroller wraps up his day at Washington College, where he will attend and give remarks at the dedication and ribbon cutting of Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall, a sustainable building that will serve as home to the Center for Environment and Society and provide both classroom and laboratory spaces for the College’s growing environmental programs.
