Comptroller to Present Schaefer Award in Garrett County on Thursday

Franchot will also visit new coffee roaster in Cumberland

Comptroller Peter Franchot

Comptroller Franchot will travel to Western Maryland on Thursday, beginning in Oakland where he will present the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Garrett County to Reverend Dr. Chip Lee on behalf of the It's in The Bag! program. Founded in 2008 as a partnership between three local churches to fill the nutrition gap for at-risk children, the program secured donations of seven meals in a bag for kids to take home every weekend and holiday. More than 1,200 students have benefited from the program so far, which has grown to support roughly 300 at-risk students each academic year.

Later, the Comptroller will head to Basecamp Coffee Company in Cumberland to present owner Hayden Ort-Ulm with a proclamation. A new addition to Cumberland, Basecamp uses fresh hand-roasted beans in its products and has already partnered with 1812 Brewery to collaborate on a coffee stout beer.
