Comptroller Franchot to Spend Friday in Mt. Airy

Local businessman to receive William Donald Schaefer Award for work to combat opioid addiction

Comptroller Peter Franchot

Mr. Franchot will spend Friday in Mt. Airy, beginning with the presentation of the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Carroll County to Frank Iliano. The restaurateur and commercial businessman has been integral in creating a grassroots organization to combat the devastating effects of opioid addiction. The "Iliano Project" facilitates group counseling and connects people with the critical resources necessary to help them overcome their dependence.

Next, the Comptroller will present a proclamation to William Wagner and his son Michael, second and third generation owners of Wagner Meats. In 2018 this family-owned butcher shop was named "Maryland's Best" by Agricultural Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. The Wagners have processed and sold quality meats to local customers since 1953, and long provided assistance to those in need in the close-knit community.

Mr. Franchot will then stop by the Mt. Airy Senior and Community Center to thank volunteers preparing taxes at no cost for low-to-moderate income taxpayers under AARP Foundation's Tax-Aide program. IRS-certified volunteers provide this service at locations across Maryland. Through the tax filing deadline on April 15, the Comptroller will visit several Tax-Aide sites and other organizations offering similar tax assistance programs.
