Comptroller Franchot to Present William Donald Schaefer Awards on Eastern Shore Tuesday

Talbot Goes Purple will be honored for substance abuse awareness; teenager Gregory Couch recognized for establishing local Project Linus chapter

Comptroller Peter Franchot

Comptoller Franchot will spend Tuesday on the Eastern Shore, beginning in Easton, where he will present the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Talbot County to Sheriff Joe Gamble and Lucie Hughes, former president of the Tidewater Rotary Club, for their efforts to raise awareness and reduce the risk of substance abuse through their nonprofit foundation, Talbot Goes Purple.

He will then make several stops in Oxford, first stopping to present a proclamation to the Reverend Kevin Cross on behalf of the Church of the Holy Trinity for providing food and financial assistance to members of the U.S. Coast Guard station in Oxford during the recent federal government shutdown.

Mr. Franchot will next swing by The Treasure Chest, where he will present a proclamation to artist/manager Joan Nubie for selling products and creations by local artists. Afterwards, he'll head to the Robert Morris Inn, America's oldest full-service inn where he will present a proclamation to owner Ian Fleming.

The Comptroller will wrap up the day in Stevensville, where he will recognize Gregory Couch, the recipient of the William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award for Queen Anne's County. Gregory, 13, a seventh-grader at Stevensville Middle School, is responsible for establishing the Mid-Shore chapter of Project Linus, which provides donated blankets to children in need of comfort at medical facilities.
