Franchot to Present Cornerstone Awards in Charles, Calvert on Monday

Electric co-op, veteran-owned contractor that emphasize philanthropy, community service will be honored

Comptroller Peter Franchot

Comptroller Franchot will spend Monday in Southern Maryland, presenting the Cornerstone Award for Local Business Excellence in two counties. The award recognizes businesses that are part of the fabric of their communities and those that have adapted to economic challenges and evolved to meet customer demands, while showing a commitment to the community through sponsorships, community service, charitable giving and civic engagement.

In Charles County, he'll honor Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, one of the largest customer-owned utilities in the nation. SMECO is deeply involved in the community, awarding scholarships to local students, honoring STEM educators and raising money for area nonprofits through an annual bike ride.

Later, Mr. Franchot will head to Calvert County to present the Cornerstone Award to PATRIOT, a veteran-owned, service-disabled contractor that has rapidly grown since its founding in 2009. The company has generated $250 million in revenue and donated more than $340,000 to Calvert Family Advocates, which supports programs like summer camps for homeless children, job training for young adults and support for vulnerable seniors.

The Comptroller concludes his day with a visit to the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad to thank first responders and present a proclamation recognizing the station's service to the community since 1981.
